FRP Tank Cleaning and Maintenance Tips

FRP or fibre-reinforced plastic is a material that is commonly used in the manufacturing of various chemical plant equipment such as tanks and vessels. It is also used in industries such as wood, pulp and paper, fertilizers, metal extraction, and so on.

The cleaning of fibre-reinforced plastic requires appropriate instruments and training. Here are some tips on cleaning and maintenance of FRP tanks.

Regular Inspections and Maintenance
FRP Tank Manufacturers recommend that these tanks are inspected and maintained every three to five years to reduce the risk of any problems that may arise with the tank mid-functioning. The quality of the tank’s coating, valves, and other systems can be affected by the accumulation of varnish, gum, or other contaminants that are usually found in these tanks.

These tanks require particular cleaning solutions and processes to bring them back to their previous level of functioning. Also, during inspections, all cracks, exposed fibres, damages, structural problems, etc. that are observed must be reported to the customer. The valves too must be thoroughly inspected for any damage.

Maintain Optimum Temperature
The water used in the process of cleaning these tanks should not be hotter than a temperature of 180°F as too much heat can also cause problems in the tanks. When steam is used, particular attention should be paid to the temperature. If the tanks are placed in areas that are extremely cold then the temperature inside the tank should only be raised gradually so as to prevent any damage.

Careful Usage of Tank Cleaning Equipment
The spinners on this equipment should be carefully fitted and used. A loose spinner can cause extensive damage to the tanks if precautions are not taken. Care must be taken additionally, to make sure that the cones fit properly.

Steps in Cleaning a Storage Tank

  • The area around the tank must be cleaned thoroughly at first. After that, the tank top must be cleaned similarly.
  • Following this, all tools that are going to be used in the cleaning process should be disinfected.
  • With the help of a sludge motor, all the water or any other liquid and any sludge that is in the tank should be emptied out.
  • The tanks should be manually scrubbed with the appropriate equipment to remove the fungus, dirt, or any sediments that may be present.
  • A high-pressure jet is then used to wash the floor, the ceiling, and the walls of the tank. The temperature of the water should be optimal.
  • Next, vacuum cleaning is performed so that the dirt and sediments are suctioned off.
  • After the vacuum cleaning process is done, the tank should be disinfected with an anti-bacterial spray.
  • Once that is done, fill the tank with water so that the pipes too can be disinfected properly.
  • Once the water drains out and the tank is dry, it’s safe for use once again.

The cleaning of FRP tanks takes about four to six hours on average. Cleaning FRP storage tanks where solid material is kept is easier than cleaning those used for storing liquid. However, regular maintenance is necessary for the health of those who use the material stored in the tank (if it is for domestic use) and to protect the quality of the chemical process that requires these tanks for storage and other purposes.

The accumulation of algae and other microorganisms within a tank is quite common if they are not cleaned and maintained properly. With potable water used for drinking or other purposes, a lot of diseases or skin allergies can be traced back to unclean tanks even when the water has been purified.
