The Innkeepers can be a 2012 horror film composed, directed, and edited by Ti Western world, starring Kelly McGillis, Pat Healy and Sara Paxton.
A man and a young girl are working the final night at a rural Connecticut inn that has a spooky past. They determine to find out if there really are any ghosts living in the hotel before the place shuts down once and for all.
Writer/Director Ti West, after only a handful of films, has developed a really distinctive style for himself and this style is very much on display in his or her latest film, THE INNKEEPERS, a tense, haunted house style thriller.
Sara Paxton stars while Claire, a tomboyish girl within her early 20s along with little to no aspiration in life. Her co-worker (Jim Healy) is a bit older with equally little in the form of ambition, other than to mash on Claire. These are our 2 leads and, like HOUSE OF THE PARTICULAR DEVIL before it, we are focused solely on them for the vast majority of the film.
Without any kind regarding chemistry between Paxton along with Healy, the film would stagger but West wisely doesn’t make an effort to immediately crank up the stress in the hotel and spends the initial act instead building a rapport in reference to his two leads. Paxton is an enchanting horror vixen, mainly because she doesn’t resemble a scream queen. She wears no make-up, dresses in dowdy work clothes and contains a boyish bob reduce. But she’s cute and funny all alike and we understand why her co-worker gets the hots for her in addition to uses his paranormal attention to spook her into going to him for protection.
West is a home of considerable weight in relation to tone and style and hits the mark superbly on those notes during the entire film. It’s a quiet, lurking affair of coming dread and uses that to develop suspense instead of low cost jump scares. West will often hold an attempt so long with nary a noise about the soundtrack almost daring someone to look away.
But while West excels at those tasks of filmmaking, he still seems to have trouble with the development of the scripts. I’m still not really sure what the meaning behind the ghost story was and when you read too much into it, you’ll notice how flimsy it happens to be. There’s a ghost on the hotel! But wait, that’s not really the particular ghost! Or wait… maybe it is? But who’s that?
It feels sometimes from the movie that West had a thought of what he desired to do and had to beef up a number of the plot around that simple bones idea, filling it with mythological mumbo-jumbo as well as a psuedo clairvoyant-cum-drunk played simply by Kelly McGillis. The movie would’ve been just like effective (and probably moreso) if Gulf had kept his puzzle a mystery.
While the script will be paper thin, THE INNKEEPERS is still a simple yet effective little indie thriller that continues to prove Ti West is a horror director worth enjoying. If he can discover a collaborator for his subsequent script, I’d be very interested to discover where he can get.
